It almost sounds like Vista installed the bootloader on both XP machines..which would result in Vista 2x and XP Pro. Selection of XP Pro is then looking at the original boot.ini file which probably has been edited by Vista with a few remarks at the beginning of the file and two entries for XP.

Just so you know, I did go back and install the drivers that came on the CD-ROM, same problem. I then downloaded the most recent drivers from Epson, .... My laptop runs XP and has 512 MB, and it's really fast! Vista's minimum is supposed to be 1 GB, but it should still run at least decently at half of that!

Back in the Registry Editor, I found the right entry, deleted the LowerFilters data type, quit the Editor, then rebooted Vista. .... It comes with Windows Vista Premium installed on it. Ten minutes into using the laptop I get a blue screen of death, which I haven't seen since Windows 98.

... back in. if it works under xp then id have to say the drives are to old for a vista configuration. if they dont work. then my faulty drive thoughts remain. Restarting or a fresh morning-boot don't make a difference. I now use 'hibernate' a lot, that way the harddisk does not disappear when restarting.
